Doubtfully Blacklisted: Eddie Albert / Margo Albert

Eddie Albert, actor (Born Edward Albert Heimberger) Said to have been blacklisted after June 1954. Albert’s wife,  Mexican-Irish American actress, Margo, (She didn’t use a last name in her career)

was known for her left-leaning politics. According to her son “My mom was blacklisted for appearing at an anti-Franco rally; she was branded a Communist, was spat upon in the streets, and had to have a bodyguard.”
Where and when the attacks happened aren’t documented in any newspapers or celebrity news sites. Supposedly, in 1950, Albert's name was published in "Red Channels", and Blacklisted. However, evening excluding his stage work, Albert worked more in the 1950s than he did at any time in his four decades in showbusiness.
As far as Margo is concerned, there wasn’t much of a career anyway. From 1934 through 1939 she has a total of 7 credits to her name and that includes two films made in Mexico. From 19431949, she has five credits to her name. However, in the decade of the 1950s, when she was supposedly and out of work, she had 11 screen credits, one credit less than her combined credits for the 1930s and 1940s.  She had only five credits to her name in the 1960s, after the backlist ended,  the and apparently quit acting in 1965.
As harsh as it is, such is actors life, Margo had more or less been restricted to roles as a Mexican/generically Latin actor. How many roles were there for a 35 year old Mexican actress in Hollywood in the 1950s?  Not many. Also, it’s important to note that in the 1950's, Margo and Albert performed in nightclubs around the country, singing and dancing in a series of revues directed by Herbert Ross. She went on to a long and celebrated career as a sponsor of the arts and worked on the President’s Commission for Arts.

Just because someone’s name appeared in Red Channels, that doesn’t mean they were blacklisted. It just means there name appeared in Red Channels.
Just because a person said they were blacklisted doesn’t mean they were. Many people in Hollywood have lied about being blacklisted over the years.
If  a person was actually blacklisted…and not many were actually blacklisted….it was the studios and TV sponsors who blacklisted them. Not the United States federal government.
If a person claims the blacklist ruined their career, they should be able to prove they had a career before the blacklist.
