Howard Bay, scenic designer: If
Bay was blacklisted, it is difficult to determine who blacklisted him and when
he was blacklisted or how that supposed blacklisting harmed his career. Primarily a designer on big budget Broadways
plays, he doesn’t appear to have ever
been out of work throughout the 1950s.
If the claim is that he was banned from TV and
film, it’s a thin argument. From 1939 until 1960, he had a total of four
television credits in his long career, one of those credits was for an award
show where he was honored. He is credited with design work in three films

Just because someone’s name
appeared in Red Channels, that doesn’t mean they were blacklisted. It just
means there name appeared in Red Channels.
Just because a person said they
were blacklisted doesn’t mean they were. Many people in Hollywood have lied
about being blacklisted over the years.
If a person was actually blacklisted…and not
many were actually blacklisted….it was the studios and TV sponsors who
blacklisted them. Not the United States federal government.
If a person claims the blacklist
ruined their career, they should be able to prove they had a career before the
blacklist.
